Understanding Backflow, Prevention, and Cross‑Connection Control
A simple breakdown of what backflow is, how it threatens water quality, and the certified systems used to stop it.
What is Backflow?
In plumbing, the term backflow defines wastewater that is flowing backward towards - and possibly into - clean water lines. A property must prevent backflow to avoid its clean water supply from being contaminated by wastewater.
Backflow Prevention
Backflow prevention refers to an engineered system’s preventative measures to stop water from flowing the wrong way. In most scenarios, backflow prevention is intended to keep wastewater from returning and entering into clean water lines and the fresh water supply.
Any connection between clean (potable) water and non-potable water where contamination could occur. This differs from backflow in that it is the physical connection that allows contamination, whereas backflow is the event where contaminated water actually flows backward. Cross-connection is prevented by installing backflow prevention devices, such as air gaps, vacuum breakers, RPZs, etc.
Common Types of Backflow Prevention
At Nationwide, we routinely service each of the following backflow systems:
Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA)
Used in low contamination risk situations, this system uses two check valves in a series to prevent backflow.
Reduced Pressure Zone Device (RPZ / RPBA)
Used in high risk contamination scenarios such as facilities that produce chemical, medical, and industrial waste. The RPZ protects against both back-pressure and back siphonage.
Air Gap
Physical space between the water outlet and the highest possible water level.
Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB)
Commonly used in irrigation systems. A simple system that uses air to stop back-siphonage
Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB)
Commonly used outdoors in commercial sprinkler setups. It’s like AVB but works under constant pressure.
